December 10, 2015 was an awesome day! I had the pleasure of shooting my first adoption hearing at the Jefferson District Courthouse in Downtown Louisville, KY. The adoption of Sophia and Jake was such an amazing and touching event to witness. Below is the story of how these cuties officially became a part of the Buccola family as told by their mother, Valerie:
“Six years ago, my husband and I wed on a snowy, wintery day in Kentucky, with big dreams to start a big family. When the priest asked, “Will you accept children lovingly from God?”, we had no idea what He was really asking of us. We had always talked about adoption, and after a few years of marriage, we looked at each other and asked ourselves, ‘What are we waiting for?’
We began our foster-to-adopt journey three years ago. It included extensive training, learning all the ups and downs of foster care; letting us know this wouldn’t be easy. A year after our training we were placed with our first sibling group, Keris and Ryder, who are now 9 and 12, and are still going through the courts to determine where their forever home will be. They have been in the system for almost three years now; the hard parts of foster care. We recently learned they will likely stay with us! Prayers continued….
After a year with Keris and Ryder, we felt the tug to take in more children. When you get referrals every day for children that need homes, it’s so hard to say no. We were matched with another younger sibling group who were ready to be adopted. This meant no court dates like we were currently going through. But then I panicked a little. Could we really take in TWO more children? We reached out to friends and family members, asking for support and advice as to what we should do. Our hearts were telling us to do one thing and our minds were telling us to do another. When it finally came down to it, we asked ourselves, ‘What would God want us to do?’ And then it became an easy decision.
I’m not going to lie, I was terrified going to meet these little children for the first time. I almost cancelled on several occasions. But the night we finally met them, we just knew they were supposed to be with us. A week later, Sophia and Jake, five and six years old, came to be with us permanently. They truly brought our family together and made it whole. These sweet, innocent children showed our whole family that love lights the way. They’ve made our hearts bigger than I could have ever possibly imagined.
On December 10, 2015, we made these babies officially ours! Sophia and Jake couldn’t have been happier! We wanted to capture this day with photographs, so we will remember forever: every day we choose to Love.”
